FAQs

1) What kind of computer donations do you accept? Do you accept non-working computers? And is my donation tax-deductible?

We are specifically looking for business and corporate donation. However, we love computer donations of all kinds. Every computer, monitor and accessory (keyboards, mice, power cords, software) donation is tax-deductible and we will provide you with a receipt upon your donation. Any donation that we are unable to refurbish we are able to recycle. We have partnered with IMS Electronics Recycling, a state certified recycler, and can dispose of non-working, “unusable” or “dinosaur” computers in an environmentally friendly way. We are paid by the pound for our recycled monitors and hard drives and 100% of these funds go towards purchasing new software for the systems we place within the community. This allows every donation to make a difference.

2) Do you take printers, faxes, ink cartridges, TV's, etc?

Yes. While we cannot use these items for the benefit of Computers 2 SD Kids, our partnership with IMS Electronics Recycling allows us to dispose of these items for you in an environmentally friendly way. All revenue from the recycled goods goes directly to cover software costs for systems that are refurbished.

3) Where can I drop off of my donations?

Drop-offs are accepted by appointment at our warehouse and refurbishing center: 7630 Miramar Road, Suite 2300, San Diego, CA 92126. Please contact us at (858) 635-5774 or email at info@computers2sdkids.org to schedule an appointment. Click here for directions.

4) Do you accept cash donations?

Yes, Yes, Yes…. We are a growing non-profit organization and every little bit helps! Please see our Donate Today page for ways you can contribute.

5) How does the refurbishing process work? I have sensitive material on my computer and how can I erase it?

We work with a very talented team of technology volunteers who refurbish the machines. Many of our donors choose to “wipe” the disk drives of their computers before they are donated to protect sensitive information. In cases where this is not done, we use a software package called “D-ban” that wipes the disks seven times to ensure that no data is recoverable. We then install a new operating system as well as application software.

6) How do you apply and what is the application process?

Applications can be downloaded here or please call (858) 635-5774. Once an application is received, it is processed and accepted candidates are then put on a waitlist and contacted once we have refurbished a computer for them. The wait time for a computer varies because it is dependent on the amount and kind of donations we receive.  Visit the Apply Now link on the right.

7) Who gets the computers?

Aiming to close the digital divide, we put all of our efforts toward combating this problem. We place the computers in the homes of underprivileged families who have a need for technology to enhance their children’s academic success. Our goal is to provide computers to be used for school work; however, we know that having a computer in the home also enables families in many different and positive ways.

8) How can I get involved? Where and when can I sign up to volunteer?

We are in constant need of enthusiastic volunteers and used computer equipment. If you are technologically inclined and would like to get involved in our refurbishment process, please email info@computers2sdkids.org. If you are not technologically inclined we would still love your involvement and participation. This can include donating your time to refurbish used computers, helping us facilitate large donations, and helping with administrative tasks at our San Diego location. You are also encouraged to spread the word about our program by posting information, such as flyers, posters, and brochures, to help us acquire more computer donations. So please contact us (858) 635-5774.
